The origin of SCP-II®

SCP-II® is derived from 100% salmon nasal cartilage, which is a dish that is eaten in Japan called Hizu (氷頭). Hizu is clear, soft, and edible and is often used to make pickled food called Sunomono. The Japanese have been eating Hizu from at least the mid Heian Period and still consume it in the present.

SCP-II® is made with salmon nasal cartilage from salmon heads of wild caught salmon that would either be made into fish meal or thrown away. It is sustainably sourced as no additional harvesting is required to meet the demands of current SCP-II production.

SCP-II® is also safe for consumption. The amount of Hizu traditionally eaten as one portion is about 40grams, which would contain about 539mg of proteoglycan. This corresponds to almost 18 to 36 times the amount of recommended daily intake of proteoglycan in SCP-II®.
